Biographical Information
Rebecca (Mescalero Apache/Mexican-American) earned an MFA in Exhibition Design and Museum Studies at California State University, Fullerton and then completed an MA in American Indian Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles. She went on to earn her PhD in American Studies from the University of New Mexico. Her dissertation, "Past is Perfect in the Present Tense: Exhibiting Native America in Museums and Culture Centers," is an examination of the inherent complexities in the public representation of culture(s) -- including how describing and defining Native American objects aids in the construction of Amerindian identity. She has worked in a variety of institutions, including universities, museums and archives such as the Center for Southwest Research, the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center and the Southwest Museum in Los Angeles. Her current research project is "Kateri in Los Angeles," a working study of the City of Angels Kateri Circle, a Roman Catholic social organization that honors Saint Kateri Tekakwitha. She has worked at the AISC since 2007.
